It’s winter 1852, on a train travelling between Birmingham and Gloucester. When the train stops suddenly the passengers congregate in the first class carriages – rich and poor, young and old, from the city, town and countryside. As they huddle for warmth, their stories begin to unfold…

A collaboration with the Everyman Theatre Cheltenham, All Aboard! has grown out of the story of the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway, one of the oldest in the world, connecting industrial Birmingham to the spa town of Cheltenham.

All Aboard! uses the lives of the individual characters to explore the dynamism of this inventive era. It also looks at how the Victorians laid the foundations for much of modern life, making connections between historical events and contemporary contexts and questions to cover:

  • Class and society
  • Industry and mass production
  • Empire
  • Mobility and migration
