My Street

Drama project exploring the changing face of Ladypool Road

Home

My Street was an intergenerational drama and history project funded by Be Birmingham.

The project was developed in order to explore new and creative means of capturing and recording the history of the local area (Balsall Heath) with young people to bring about new perspectives and support community cohesion.

The project was led by Juliet Fry and supported by Rochi Rampal. Sound recording was by Duncan Grimley. Digital and web site development was led by Gary Roskell and Gavin Medza.

Ninety Year 5 children from Anderton Park Primary School in Balsall Heath took part in the research and drama work and twenty nine children devised the final performance. Forty five drama and history sessions took place at Anderton Park Primary School, Birmingham Library Archives, The Play House and on location in Balsall Heath.

The photographs, documents and children’s work have been recorded to create a DVD to be used by the school and shared with other children and teachers. Each child that was part of the devising process will receive a copy of the DVD to take home to share with their families. Both the Balsall Heath History Society and Birmingham Library Archives are putting the children’s work and the materials collected on their own website and there are plans to share some aspect of the programme with the community via a radio programme for South Birmingham Community Radio.
