Key themes: English, SMSC, Black History Month

Inspired by the real portraits of Commonwealth migrants taken by Birmingham photographer Ernest Dyche in the 1950s and 60s. The story follows the experience of a young person newly arrived in our city, the challenges they faced and the achievements and sacrifices they made. The children explore the significance of migrants in the history and future of Birmingham and reflect on what it takes to belong to a city and make it your home.

“Fits with our inclusive school ethos. It helped the children to be proud of who they are and understand that no matter what race or religion, everyone is equal.” Year 6 teacher, St James C of E Primary, Handsworth
