Transitions summer schemes

Home

The Play House has run a range of summer schemes and projects in association with local EAZs and Extended Services clusters. Recent projects have included tranistion from Nursery to Reception and from Primary to Secondary.

Primary to secondary transition

An example of this is the week long summer Transitions project for Balsall Heath Extended Schools Cluster.

  • The Transitions summer scheme was a week of drama based workshops for a mixed gender group of up to 15 year six pupils about to go to Moseley School
  • The project was set across the course of five days. The first two days were held at Tindal Primary school, the last three days at Moseley secondary School, with a sharing of pupils work on the final day.
  • The summer scheme was a great success, enjoyed by children, facilitators, workers and parents alike.  The format worked extremely well and was successful in demystifying the move to secondary school, whilst enabling pupils to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings.

The feedback was very positive. Participants commented:

My favourite day was Monday because we got to play lots of games and make new friends
I liked Wednesday because we got to use our imaginations to go back in time

Parents were equally enthusiastic:

He’s been coming home saying he’s travelled through time
He’s told me loads about the history of the school
Can it be extended for the whole summer?”

Another way to explore issues around Transitions can be seen in the Castle Vale peer education project.

Nursery to reception

Another week-long Transition project, this time at Nelson Mandela Primary School, helped children from Nursery or pre-school move to reception.

The week involved a variety of activities around a farm theme, including creative play involving environments and craft activities with a visual artist; Little Red Hen, an expanded version of an early years theatre-in-education programme from The Play House; a trip to Umberslade Children’s Farm; and storytelling and drama based on the weeks activities
